DSST – A Top Performing High School – Stapleton, Denver, CO
When my wife and I first contemplated leaving Chicago, it was mostly due to our long-term goals related to the education of our daughter. Having recently visited Denver, this is where we began our search. What we found was a variety of educational choices, with many schools achieving national ranking.
While our daughter was only 18-months old at the time, we decided to move to Stapleton. As it turns out, we ended up with one of the state’s top performing high schools in our back yard. The Denver School of Science and Technology (DSST) is located at 2000 Valentia Street, Denver, CO, 80238. It lies on the southern end of Stapleton and, according to the Colorado Department of Education, it was 1 out of 18 high schools to be rated as “high performing” in 2009 and the only DPS high school on the list.
Recently, DSST’s distinction as a top performing high school was validated when they were named one of six finalists to have President Obama speak at their commencement. So even though Colorado was not awarded any of the Race to the Top grant money, DSST has proven it is in a class of its own. They have survived a rigorous application process and soon there will be an opportunity to vote for our favorite schools at WhiteHouse.gov. Check back frequently and show your support!
To learn more about DSST, or any of the Stapleton schools, the Stapleton United Neighbors Education Committee is also a great resource. So whether you are still trying to navigate the ECE and primary grades, or want to learn more about schools in the surrounding are, check them out. For example, just beyond Stapleton’s borders is the Denver School of Arts. Another highly rated high school, something along the lines of movie “Fame”.
Again, my wife and I have been very pleased with our educational options here. Stapleton is a very active community, so I don’t find it surprising that the schools in the area are thriving. It’s just a great place to live and learn.
